Behind the wheel

Begur and its coves. Begur's hill town and the coves below it—Aiguablava, Sa Tuna, Fornells—sit on narrow, twisting roads with limited parking near the water. A compact convertible or coupé handles the switchbacks more comfortably than a larger SUV, and early arrival matters most in July and August.

Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc. These two seafront villages keep much of their old fishing-town layout, so streets close to the water are tight and often pedestrian-first in season. Renting gives the flexibility to park on the outskirts and walk in, or to time visits around lunch service at the harbor-front restaurants.

S'Agaró and Platja d'Aro. South of Palamós, this stretch mixes gated residential roads around S'Agaró with the wider promenade and shopping streets of Platja d'Aro. It's an easy drive for an afternoon of beach clubs or dinner reservations, with more generous parking than the villages further north.

Girona, inland. Girona city is a straightforward inland run from Palamós, useful for clients combining a coastal stay with the old quarter, the cathedral steps and the covered bridges over the Onyar. Driving in avoids fixed rail timetables and leaves the return trip open-ended.

Empordà countryside. West of the coast, the Empordà plain opens into vineyards, stone-built wineries and quieter back roads through towns like Peratallada and Pals. It suits a slower half-day out, with most estates offering their own parking for visitors arriving by car.
