Marbella and Puerto Banús. A straightforward hour along the AP-7, this stretch rewards a car with presence. Valet culture is standard at the marina hotels, so a Bentley or Range Rover draws less attention than you'd think — it simply belongs.
Ronda and the Serranía mountain roads. The A-397 climbs through tight bends and long straights that suit a car built for handling rather than just comfort. Fuel up before leaving the city; petrol stations thin out once the road starts to climb.
Estepona and the western Costa del Sol. Quieter than Marbella, with a promenade and marina that fill slowly through the afternoon. A convertible works well here — the drive itself, not just the destination, is the point.
Antequera and El Torcal. Inland roads open out into farmland and limestone ridges, a contrast to the coastal strip. Parking near the town centre is limited, so an SUV with easy manoeuvrability earns its keep.
Nerja and Frigiliana. East along the N-340, the coastline narrows and the towns turn more residential. Street parking in Frigiliana's old quarter is tight; leaving the car on the edge of town and walking in is the practical choice.
