Chianti wine roads. Vineyard lanes around Greve in Chianti and Radda reward a car with sharp steering and quick throttle response. Roads narrow past stone walls and estate gates, so a compact GT or convertible handles tastings better than a full-size saloon.
San Gimignano and the Valdelsa hill towns. The ridge roads west of Florence climb through tight switchbacks toward San Gimignano and its neighbouring towns. Parking near the walls is limited, so a car with a tighter turning circle makes the approach easier than a longer vehicle.
Siena and the Crete Senesi. The drive south toward Siena opens onto long stretches of Tuscan countryside suited to a faster, steadier pace. Siena's own centre keeps its own restrictions, but parking areas just outside the walls take most rental cars without difficulty.
Versilia coast. Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio sit within a manageable drive from Florence, reached mainly via open autostrada before the coastal roads narrow near the shore. A convertible suits this stretch best outside the busiest summer weekends.
Mugello valley
Mugello valley. North of the city, Mugello's roads rise and fall through wooded passes favoured by drivers who care more about handling than scenery. Fewer coach tours use this route, leaving clearer roads for a car built for cornering.
