Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda. The natural base for a rental here: boutique-lined streets, marina traffic in high season, and short distances between hotels and restaurants that suit a compact or mid-size sports car more than a long-wheelbase saloon. Valet parking is common at the main hotels, which simplifies handling a higher-value vehicle.
Palau and the gateway to La Maddalena. Palau's harbour road handles ferry traffic for the archipelago, so timing matters if you're coordinating a car with a boat departure. The drive up from the Costa Smeralda is short and coastal, with enough bends to make an open-top worth requesting for the return leg.
Golfo di Cala di Volpe and Baja Sardinia. A quieter stretch than Porto Cervo itself, with resort access roads that reward a car with good low-speed manners. Useful for guests splitting a stay between two properties in the same bay, where a rental removes dependence on hotel transfers.
Olbia and the airport corridor. Olbia is the practical entry and exit point for most Costa Smeralda bookings. Airport handover works well for business travellers and short breaks; the drive north to the coast takes under an hour and gives an early sense of how the car handles before the resort roads narrow.
Cagliari and the southern coast. A different proposition from the north: city driving, a larger airport, and longer coastal roads toward the south. Better suited to itineraries that combine a business stop in the capital with leisure days elsewhere on the island, rather than a single-resort stay.
